yes.. we dont want the 'chain' bit.. and the fabric used is less decorative more functional, weatherproof and hard wearing.

Shamus` martingale is all fabric. (just FYI).
And it`s very wide to be comfortable.
He doesn`t pull, but he can walk out of a flat collar if he reverses suddenly as he has a big neck and narrow head.
Here it is...

i dont not get anything. just clarifying my original comment that the linked picture looked like half check/choke/martingale, as originally a few people said they werent, but we have now worked out they are, havent we?

the humane bit is an interesting side discussion, as i have heard some people argue that half checks are inhumane also.

that i dont get.. as correctly fitted they are like a flat collar with noise

to be fair of course no collar is the ideal..but(among other things) the law requires otherwise.

Honestly, I really dont think they should be banned... not that I believe in them, but it makes it difficult to talk about them. My dogs all wear cloth Martingale type collars (similar to your half check collars, but cloth only, no chain), yes they tighten, but I have 2 dogs that slip out of collars, so it's easier. Though I had a Choke chain on Mouse for awhile, but dint panic, I had her tag attached to the chain, so the collar wouldn't tighten... I was just trying it to see if it wouldn't rub the fur off her neck...

But it can become difficult to explain things to people if there are bans in place... I wanted to rant about CM using e-collars on a thread, but as I didn;t mention them in the first post I did, I couldn't... made wording very, very awkward.

To me, it depends how they are fitted. They can, of course, be fitted so that when the collar tightens, it does so to a point that the neck is squeezed, ie choke effect. However, many fit them so that they tighten only to the point of a regular flat collar and use them for their ease of putting on and taking off.

its for the same reasons as an ordinary choke chain.
choke chains are actually call check chains, and you check them, or make a noise like you say.
however, like full check chains, you can also use half checks/martingales to yank the dog out of annoyance. hence why they are also referred to as choke chains and half chokes.

You can yank a flat collar in annoyance if you're really determined to! If you're likely to do that then it'd be you not the dog that needs training!
