I agree with the sentiment, but when calling for a new piece of legislation, you have to ask yourself whether it could and would actually be enforced. Is it yet another meaningless law that can easily be ignored and thus contributes towards undermining the legal system? Will the police officer really look out for/notice the unrestrained pug on your back seat?

Driving while using a handset is illegal, yet most times I drive I see other drivers doing it - quite openly. And nobody gives a fig.

I'd be much happier to support an awareness campaign.

I do not sign petitions.

As no seatbelt for dogs yet meets EN/ISO/BSi standards (as there are not any) I do not support the use of seatbelts (although they are better than nothing) I also find them impractical.

I keep my dogs in bespoke car cages where, research has shown they are safer than in belts.

Trevor Turner (vet) wrote an article some time ago about damage to dogs in seat belts v crates, he found no evidence of serious injury in the latter but plenty in the former.

Dog seat belts ONLY prevent dogs from leaving the car at best, they do not prevent injury.

Laws already exist to deal with this in any case under distraction and it is not enforced.

I drive circa 40k miles per annum and I cannot tell you how many people I see on hand held phones negotiationg roundabouts etc.

In addition drivers are still on the road who drink, have no licence, no insurance, no MOT.....................

This is similar to the chip v tattoo campaigns.

I prefer to choose my OWN restraints in the car and they do NOT include seatbelts.

Another knee jerk reaction petition which has not been properly thought out.

Gets off soap box and takes placard down..........

I was rather hoping this was a petition to ban flexileads on pavements.
