Cuddly toys are great sibling substitutes I buy baby safe ones from the charity shops and wash them making sure the eyes are safe (I usually remove them and sew some on with wool ). They usually cost 50p, much less than the pet shop toys. Chloe has a Springer puppy and two teddies which she loves. (Also make sure they are not filled with any kind of beans).

I would also get a copy of 'The Fast Track Puppy Survival Kit' by Lyn Fleet and Helen Roberts, both members of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (whose members use kind, fair and effective methods). It only costs £4 , I think a copy should be given to every new puppy owner .
We have had four puppies between us in my family/friends recently and I gave each person a copy to get them off to a good start
...get it here...

The methods used are the same as those of Ian Dunbar mentioned by Anne in the post above.
Don't listen to them.....
Seriously a great book recommendation that has a great socialisation checklist. VERY useful. They also have written an excellent book about adolescence. They are an easy read and very user friendly, written in a very approachable and down to earth manner , I would also HIGHLY recommend it!

Now I'm going to ask them for some royalties....I spend my life recommending these two to people...

thanks for the advice folks, I'll take a look at that book and maybe order one this evening.

Our breeder is supplying blanket with every puppy so they have something that smells of mum but will be taking towels and stuff for the car as well.

Surprised the pup is not already insured, when we bred from Willow all ours came with petplan insurance and came with food as well as well as the usual jabs and vet checks.

This only covered for 10 weeks though. I whole heartedly recommend AXA insurance, we have had a few and they have been by far the best.

Bet you can't wait, its exciting to get a new pup!!!

Hi Esme, If your puppy is KC registered it will come with 6 weeks free insurance which you just have to activate
Many breeders also sell a puppy with 6 weeks insurance in place.
This gives you ample time to choose and register with an insurance company of your choice. Like Fluffybunnyfeet I would also recommend AXA insurance, they give a good comprehensive insurance cover and pay up fast.

If you ordered the book from Dog Games they usually send goods by return of post.

Yep, he's all KC registered so getting the 6 weeks free insurance and will use the time, if i get any spare time from the pup!, to look up other insurers.

I did order the book from Dog Games, just been back on their site to look at delivery terms. Might not come as quick as i thought but i'll just be patient and continue my t'internet research in the meantime!

I was told you ahd to be careful with the 6 weeks free thing and ensure you took out your own as soon as is possible, the reason being, should anything happen to your pup whilst you have the KC insurance running and you make a claim...that condition will then be excluded from the insurance you choose.So...we sorted our insurance to run form the day after Cosmo came home and just used the petplan one that came with him to cover us for the journey home as he was insured immediately.
