Oh and also the babies are the worst as they tend to inject all the poison they have at once where as the adults tend to only release a small amount with a defense bite.

What a nightmare situation, and thank goodness that it did not turn out to be a disaster - it so easily could have done

Your surroundings and way of life are so very different from here in England, and I shall avidly read any of your posts because it is so good to learn of the varying trials and tribulations of dog owners in different parts of the world......I can hear your accent in the way that you write!!

Here of course, we only really have the Adder to worry about snakewise and generally their bite is not fatal, although sometimes it can be.

Went home on my break and checked her out. She hasn't moved from the same spot I left her this morning and the bite has bits of blood coming out with some brown stuff mixed in looks like and has an odor. I cleaned it up and fed her she still has an appetite. I'm waiting to hear back right now all these dang tornado sirens are going off in front of my job their about to put us all in the restrooms.

Here is a picture from this morning. Blue Lacy gyp weighs 38lbs. Has two different sets of bite marks and smaller assuming it was baby cottonmouth or two of them.

OH MY GOD now that it my worst nightmare!!

Poor girl that leg looks very painful. I would have been straight to the vets. Does she not need anti venom?

Her spirits are much better today but the swelling hasn't gone down too much and where the bites occurred her skin is completely raw. Heck I took her brother out to the woods yesterday for a little while and she moaned and cried because she was being left behind. I think she is going to be okay just need to give her some time. I've been treating her with Benadryl & Amoxicillin as well as daily water therapy.

Dogs being snake bit are less likely to have death occur then us humans. If it were me, I'd be in the emergency room or worse right now specially with multiple bites and immature snakes at that. The baby snakes do not know how to control their venom and inject more then the amount needed as to where the adults limit the amount of venom and save it for when it is really needed. Back to your question though it is not needed but I do know of some folks who get anti-rattlesnake venom although it does not always work and they don't have a long shelf life and it's expensive.

If anybody is interested this is the snake that bit Shelby. You can see how they get the name Cottonmouth. They are mean little aggressive things that can turn your world upside down quick. I'll be staying away from the creeks this spring.

I think that you should stay away from this thread at bedtime!!

I am relieved to hear that she is improving; I fret about wasp and bee stings with Jimmi, and now feel rather silly..........although, from what you say, snake bites for dogs are not quite the emergency that we would imagine it to be here.

I've seen copperheads - dead thankfully - but also seen live water moccasins, aka cottonmouths when I spent time in the southern US states. I don't envy you and your dogs living with that wildlife all around... It's not something us in the UK can really appreciate... Although I loved my time there staying with a professional wildlife ecologist who specialised in herps.

Wasn't possible then, but I would gladly have emigrated to live there and get involved in the native wildlife, maybe I still could as he has now opened a wildlife centre there in NW FL.
