Sneaks is having emergency surgery :(

I was walking with Billy and Sneaks in our usual place this morning. Sneaky ran off into the woods after a rabbit and didn't come back for ages (quite normal for him). Eventually he very slowly reappeared with his leg pouring blood. I could see that he had a very deep and very nasty wound which was bleeding a lot. I wrapped it with some kitchen towel from my pocket and secured with a sandwich bag. I managed to carry him out of the nature reserve and down to the road with Billy tied to my waist. Luckily my housemate was in and I had my mobile with me; she was an absolute star and came to collect us. The vet is only ten minutes down the road so we rushed down there and they were able to see him straight away.

She confirmed that the wound was very deep, losing a lot of blood and would require surgery. She suspects she may need to operate on his tendon but didn't want to poke around in it too much in case it encouraged more bleeding. He is there now under general and I'm worried sick.

I have absolutely no idea what happened. It's not somewhere I'd expect to see broken glass but you never know. Please keep your fingers and paws crossed for him He still had a wagging tail for the vet so I know he's happy with her.

I do have a photo of his leg, which I took on my phone in case I needed to show the vet before she unwrapped it. I'm not sure whether to post it though because it's quite gruesome

Oooooh horrible, fingers crossed he is ok.

You cannot protect dogs from EVERYTHING unfortunately.

Might be a good reminder to have a good Pocket First Aid kit with you?

Oh blimey, that sounds horrible. Perhaps he ran into a stick or something or fell on top of a bit of tree stump? always a danger in the woods.

Best wishes for a full recovery from me x

oh bless him must've been a shock, maybe worth a look in the area where it happened as it may have been barbed wire or glass and you don't want it happening again, best wishes to sneaks for a speedy recovery x

Poor Sneaks, he's recovers ok. Sending lots of positive vibes to you and Sneaks (and Billy, who'll be missing his friend)

Could he have caught himself on barbed wire or perhaps a poachers trap?

ETA - only mentioned poachers trap because there was a spot of bother in the woods near us with poachers setting up traps.
