Why won't my computer open them?.
It just wants to save them and when you then try and open it there is just a load of gibberish and things in it.

Try downloading the latest version of Adobe Acrobat (its free) it should allow you to read them in a format you can understand rather than just loads of characters. Just google Adobe Acrobat.
