Question about photographs on the web

When you visit a site like Flickr - different members have different 'permissions' on their images.

If somebody has 'no restrictions' and the album is 'public' are you allowed to copy the pic and use it on Dogsey for example ?

If they have no restrictions then yes they allow you to use their pics, but if it is flickr i'd give them an email just to make sure they are ok with it. If you know who the pic belongs to it's always best to get permission first, it's just manners really. I used to be in a group that made sig tags and you can actually get into trouble for posting certain pics and especially photography and/or artwork and sometimes you need permission to do so and/or edit the pics.

Also, if you click on 'Advanced Search' then when you search, tick the box that says something like 'creative commons' licence, then you can use any of those without permission. Also, try www.sxc.hu, it's great, you have to sign up but it's free to do that and there's loads of images you can use.

I am a member although I've no pics on it - There was a link to this lady's website so I've sent her a message through that.

With any luck she'll let me know if it's ok

Yep you can, if you click the photographer, it will come up with their album, and then click 'profile', and when that loads, under their name it should say 'Send Flickermail'

Yes, legally you can just take the picture and use it, however as has been said it is polite to ask first Also mentioned was the creative commons licence - there are several different types of creative commons licence and whilst you can take those photo's and use them, there are conditions you must adhere to.

If you want to know about the different types, then they are explained in the link below:

Creative commons - licences

Mind you, even if someone has 'All rights reserved' on their work, if you like the image and want it for non-commercial use, then if you politely ask the person who owns the image they might let you
