I think that despite the inevitable arguments within the breed about "type," in fact it has changed relatively little.
These are some of Seppala's original imports which were the foundation dogs of the Siberian Husky breed:

and these are some of ours:

Structurely not a lot, here are some from 1922 ish

Here is a David Livingston engraving (1860's)of a KoiKoi's dog, the breed that gave the RR it's ridge.

and one of Beau

The original SA standard from 1922 is very similar to todays standard except for colour - brindles, fawns, sables, whole colours or mixed with white were allowed. Now light wheaten to red wheaten are only permitted though there was a black and tan RR being shown in N.A. recently.

They certainly do!!

My first pei had a similar look to the face with a longer muzzle but they had much longer legs and very few wrinkles, although Diesel isnt quite that wrinkly now as that pic was a few years ago (shouldnt really have put "now" above my pic as he was only about a year) but he still has more wrinkles than the original and is shorter in the leg.

It has come from when they were used for fighting, the loose skin to help them turn if a dog got hold of them so they were still able to fight back, smaller ears so a dog could not get hold of them and the curled over tail to look more defensive to an attacker. Scowling face to warn off an attacker etc. Originally they were used to hunt so had no need for the "looks" they have now.

Trouble with using them to fight was they were a bit rubbish far too soft and many needed to be drugged to fight, they do not have the aggression in them to be "natural" fighters.

Character wise they are the same, cosmetic wise, completely different. Saying that, I love them then and I love them now

Mainly because they beacame popular for their wrinkles, the cute factor and also the fighting culture so they were bred with far too many to the point they were unable to see and had numerous skin problems, things are much better now but they still look alot different to the "original pei"

Original Pei

My boy now

That is a massive difference. Thanks for sharing xx

Really interesting to see how much things can change in such a short timescale

Some of the dogs look good, some, well I think the people who bred them originaly would cry if they seen todays dogs - v far away from what the breed was bred for
