Is the pup on a large breed puppy food?
If so what brand?
You could tell your friend to try adding some tripe with the pups dinner, Tripe is good for adding weight

How many meals a day is the puppy on, the way to put weight on is a number of small meals
A rough guide to the number of meals is...
Age 4-12weeks = 7am / noon / 5pm/ 10pm
Age 3-6 months = 7am/ noon / 5pm
Age 6-12months = 7am/5pm
1 year onwards = One main meal and a snack or two main meals in the winter

Try giving him porridge/puppy milk/honey for breakfast...
and sardines in oil with his main meal

If feeding lots of food fails to put weight on, maybe check with the vet that there is no medical condition preventing the puppy from metabolising the food .

I'm a raw feeder so can't really advise on which complete foods are the best although there is alot of differences between brands so choose wisely.
Some being good some not so good and price doesn't always matter!
Here's a good link that should be read by all dog owners when choosing a food!

Petfood uncovered

A complete food would be better than tinned food, luna will porobably put weight on with the change alone.
The only pet food i feed mine (very rarely) is Naturediet, if i forget to get meat out the freezer

This is what I feed my dogs on when they were pups:

http://www.trophypetfoods.co.uk/products/premiumdog.htm

I think dry puppy food is ment to be high in the protein levels as it gives them the engery they need and then as a dog gets older you reduce the levels of protein in food as they need less (depending on activity levels) and would start putting on weight.

Think this right, please correct if wrong.

This is also good information if you are swapping from tin food to dry. Toby ate tin food when I got him as a puppy then when I changed him onto dry food his coat got shinner and he was less 'smelly'!

Hope this is some help

Hi
I would say one thing.....DON'T TRY AND PUT WEIGHT ON A YOUNG DOG!!!! Feed a good quality diet at the appropriate quantities.
At 14 weeks age it will be starting to go through a leggy stage and putting on weight will only put stress on bones and joints.Weight and muscle will come with maturity!
