I have eaten both rabbit, horse and goat (to name a few), and like you say, as long as they have been reared and killed humanely, I don't see it as a problem.
I have rabbits for pets, and used to breed them, also used to loan a horse, but don't feel as though I'm eating my 'pets'. (I love a good rabbit stew!)

*Dogs are purposely slaughtered in front of other dogs, to increase their fear and stress level- as this is supposed to enhance the flavor and increase the adrenaline in their meat, which according to Chinese folklore, boosts virility.
