And guess what, here's where I upset the entire membership! I saw most of Live 8 (but not all), and I thought it wasn't a patch on the original Live Aid. The purpose was as good, the organisation was as good (or better), but we just don't have the same quality of bands these days. Robbie Williams is fine, but Freddie Mercury he ain't. Coldplay, I like, but they aren't Status Quo. Madonna hijacked the poor African lass for her own ends (I've never liked Madonna< I think that she's an undertalented tart whose best ability is self-promotion).

This is entirely my opinion, not a challenge, and no amount of firing at me from the sidelines is likely to change it.

Pink Floyd were the best lot on show, but then, I've always thought they were ace. Glad to see they can still do a big gig, they must all be in their sixties by now!

I thought that the "presenters" had missed the point a bit.... when people used to say that Live Aid couldn't be done again, it wasn't that they thought that the organising wouldn't be possible, it was that they thought they'd never be able to assemble all the talent of the original Live Aid bands. They were quite right, Live 8 didn't manage it, IMO.

The microphone system wasn't very good, either.

i am inclined to agree with Snorri - not exactly for the same reason, I was quite annoyed that they had the live8 concert - saying how many had turned out etc, and were interviewing the people - who were more interested in saying which bands they had come for rather than the purpose of the event. Meanwhile 225,000 people were marching in Edinburgh without music to make the point to the politicians, and the news described it as a g8 summit protest which it wasnt !
however I did think some of the bands were good -especially The Who and Pink Floyd, I also enjoyed the Killers and Sting...

It would be a very boring world if we were all the same:

Robbie Williams Rules!!

Indeed it would be, just as Robbie Williams is not the same as Freddie Mercury, who was the showman of a lifetime, and irreplaceable. i do remember seeing a TV concert whith Queen dragging on anyone who could be said to be a singer of some sort, to take Freddie's place. To my surprise, the best "Freddie-substitute", IMO, was, believe it or not, GEORGE MICHAEL, although I have to admit, I don't rate him much, either.
