Low protein food at reasonable price!

I wonder if anyone could recommend a low protein food for my 12 years old dog who has been diagnosed with liver disease.
I cannot afford the special hepatic food but have been told that many of the senior kibbles are low in protein.

Also...what percentage of protein constitutes low protein!!!!

Many thanks in advance

I do no feed commercial dog food, however look for low teens.

BUT

you need to determine this on a dry matter basis, do not be fooled into thinking that eg Naturediet is low in protein it is not, it says 11% on the label but that is before you take out the moisture which then results in circa 43% off the top of my head.

Thank you both.

Would that be the tinned chappie that I would mix with biscuit?

I really don't understand this protein measurement!

Look at the label for the crude protein content

eg 11%

Look at the moisture content eg 75%

So now you have 25% dry matter

Divide the 11% (or whatever the protein content is) by the 25% (or whatever the dry matter is) and then multiply by 100 and voila you have the ACTUAL protein content.

In this case 44%

You have to do this as of course WATER does not contain protein.

Low protein may not be the right answer, quality protien is needed, as dogs get older they require as much as 50% more protein than when they were younger, as there muscles and organs need to be constantly repaired which is why quality protein is so important. Low protein diet can cause further problems as the body has insuficient nutrients for maintainance and repair. Unfortunatly most commercial dog foods are made with poor quality proteins from plants and grains which for the most part are of no use.

However, dogs with liver disease typically require a diet lower in protein (according to several holistic vets who feed naturally and have a specific interest in nutrition)

Yes, but it has also been proven that insuficient protein can be very detrimental to the dog even with liver issues
