breeds

when i move out, probably a couple more years yet, i do plan on getting another dog eventually, breeds ive been looking at are : malamutes, akitas, rottweilers, dobermans etc. However after looking into these breeds a bit more they seem to be quite hardy guarding breeds. However im not keen on having a dog thats gonna try and attack a stranger that comes into the home or otherwise. Can anyone tell me, do all dogs in these breeds have a strong guarding instinct, or is it no more so than any other breed? Or is it at least controllable if they do.

knowin me id probably end up with another staffie

The wisest course of action is to research the breed and the breeders. Choose a breeder who places as much importance on breeding for temperament as on breeding for health and appearance. Also, train your dog. Most guarding breeds will be wary of strangers but this does not mean that they will attack! A guarding instinct means that they are alert and ready to warn you of any perceived threat, such as people coming onto your property, not that they will bite first and think afterwards. Usually, once they realize that there is no reason for distrust and that you accept the 'stranger', they are willing to make friends.

Think most dogs will guard unless they are trained not to. One needs to be able to tell a dog that is ok this one is welcome in our house but you can bark like mad if I have not offered an invitation. You need to be able to trust your dog with visitors who are welcome but let you know if someone is lurking or uninvited. Don't think this is a breed thing as in a good deal of cases the smaller the dog the more noise they make the larger breeds being quite, but when it comes to biting no breed should offer a threat in normal conditions whatever breed, there are temperament traits within a breed but all should be safe with people given the correct training but a good many are not keen on strange dogs in their home, particularly males, unless they are used to visiting dogs from a young age.

Having said that mine are noisy if someone is at the door and if they are let in they get mugged, nothing like being bitten but not nice if you don't like dogs, so I shut them away till the guest is settled but it still takes a while for things to settle, so who am I to offer advice, can't control my own

My neighbor has 4 rotties and all are canine good citizens who visit nursing homes and hospitals. A dog is what you raise it to be.

Abby is a Dobermann and if someone broke in she would show them where everything is, Last week when the binmen came to collect the rubbish they came into the garden(dont normally as gate is locked) Abby was out there she ran up to this man wagging her entire body and was really friendly I was really proud as this is how I want her I dont need a dog to be aggressive(Im much scarier than she could ever be) if someone broke into my house I would prefer to have her run upstairs and hide under the bed until they are gone. I have spent alot of time socialising(sp) her and going to training. I would consider reading lots about each of these breeds and talking to as many owners as possible.

Dizzy, our rottie is lovely
But...if someone tried to come into the house uninvited, I would expect Dizzy to let me know...she has a certain bark that you know straight away that things arn't right.
She is first and foremost a pet. All of the other dogs sleep in our bedroom but Dizzy will not...she sleeps in one of the childrens rooms in her chair where she can see down the hall...so I guess you would call that guarding....she see's it as her job I think and to be honest it makes me feel safe knowing that she is free to roam the house at night We are quite rural here
We rescued Dizzy and to be honest, before we never thought that we would get a Rottie but having Dizzy is a pleasure although I wouldn't advise anyone who has no experience with dogs to make A Rottie their first pet.....they can be quite strong willed
