Clicker training

Hi could anyone tell me roughly what clicker training is and what it accomplishes!? And is it any good?

Some people swear by it

basically you have a *clicker* and when the dog does as you ask you click quickly and treat immediately as a reward- after time the dog will associate the click with what you are asking it to do and the reward will no longer be needed

thats a rather simplistic explanation but hope you get my drift

we tried with our first dog but because we all did it slightly differently it was too confusing for the dog
