Tyr: 04/2001 - 30/04/2012

I still can’t believe this has happened... last night Tyr was running around the living room like a mad thing with a new catnip filled toy and now he’s dead.

He’s not seemed quite his usual self for a few weeks now, but it was just a “feeling” as far as I was concerned, there was nothing I could really put my finger on and think “This is not right,” and since he’s not seemed to be distressed in any way I was just keeping an eye on him to see how things went.

I came downstairs this morning and found him on the living room floor with his sides heaving. Rang up the vets and took him down there. He was having trouble breathing and was kept in for chest x-rays because the vet couldn’t hear his heart properly and said this could be because something was in the way.

Something was… his chest cavity (not his lungs) was filled with a large quantity of fluid and his windpipe was being pushed out of place by something else that couldn’t be seen clearly on the x-rays because of all the fluid. His lungs were only able to inflate to a fraction of their usual capacity.

The vet said his gut feeling was there was a tumour in there, and if it wasn’t a tumour it was likely the fluid was being caused by a fairly serious heart problem. He said he could drain off the fluid but the prognosis was poor and it was likely that in a couple of weeks I would be facing the dreaded decision no matter what was done today. I decided not to put Tyr through the treatment if it was only going to buy him a matter of weeks.

I’ve managed to get through the day by allowing my internal undertaker to quickly research the Association of Private Pet Cemeteries and Crematoria to find somewhere to have him cremated where I could be sure it would be his ashes that I was getting back (read too many horror stories about pet cremation for my own good). I managed to find one fairly locally.

I’m dreading going to bed tonight. He’s been sleeping on my pillow since he was four months old, I’m used to going to sleep to the sound of purring and waking up to the sound of purring and now there will be no more purr.

Oh how sad. I am glad for you and him that he didn't suffer long. You will be too when you come to terms with this.
