I too look at the owner - but am also guilty of trying to avoid getting too close to certain dogs. It may be unfair prejudice, but I would rather be safe than sorry

Wow, maybe I shouldn't have mentioned the breed. Thanks for all the supportive comments and yes, Axel is totally back to normal today, thanks. The lesson from all your experiences is that it's safer to just cross the road, regardless of breed. Sad, but your experiences have confirmed that I was too trusting of the owner, I won't make that mistake again.
I'm sorry to all of you who've had similar or worse experiences, hope all your dogs are recovered too now.

For the first time in England & Wales, the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 proscribed certain types of dog so that owners only had a limited period of time to make possession of them lawful. That time limit has expired. This law applies to the following types:-

Pit Bull Terrier
Japanese Tosa
Dogo Argentino
Fila Braziliero

Section 1 Dangerous Dogs Act 1991
It is a criminal offence to possess certain types of dog and the most common of these is the dog of the type known as the pit bull terrier. The only way such dogs can be lawfully kept is if they are registered on the Index of Exempted Dogs, but the only way such dogs can go on the Register is by Court order. There is no provision for a keeper to make an application to a Court themselves.
