Have I suggest the right thing???

my neighbour has an out of control boxer hes nearly 2 and yesterday was the last straw for us the other neighbours he got out again(have since learned he can open all doors and turn the gas on!!) my hubby nearly ran him over as didnt see him then i turned up in my car but stayed in there as im not 100% sure hed bite or not, thought they had him but saw my other neighbours son come out of the house and then saw my son so got out the car to say to my son to stay where he was and to tell the other boy to get in then noticed a mother with a child in pram hed ran up to she was petriefied but at the same time the mother of the boy whod come out had put her hand out of the door to grab her son when her lurcher ran out! he saw the boxer and went to run back indoors but the boxer went for him ,neighboiur scrreamed but he manged to get back home and the owners of the boxer (well a 19 yr old and her 12 yr old sister) manged to get the boxer as im screaming at them to get him under control.

anyway the mother came over to apologise and said she didnt know what to do with him and was going to ring rspca to get rid of him i told her they prob wouldnt take him because of how he was and to ring the boxer rescue ctrs she said the kids and her hubby wanted to keep him but shes didnt know what to do with him! I suggested that he may be a better dog if they WALKED him!!!!!!! not just once in a while BUT everyday at least twice a day as he was bored out of his head thats what having a dog entails as well as mental stimulation, someone has to get upo early b4 work and shool and walk him thats if they are serious about keeping him, they went to a trainer but didnt do anything they asked them to do at home.
Maybe he can change in the hands of ther right owner but he was bullied by their jack russel cross (he was pts as so dangerous) and dont think hes been socialised with other dogs as when they went to traiing he had to do it away from the other dogs.

It doesn't sound like that boxer has a very happy life with your neighbours & definitely sounds like they shouldn't have a dog!!

I think your advice was fine ~ a boxer rescue would probably be the best place for the dog, with people who are experienced with the breed & have the right contacts to find him the sort of home where he can be rehabilitated. At the moment he sounds like an accident waiting to happen & the owners clearly don't have a clue, nor do they seem to want to put in the time & effort to sort this dog out.

If they carry on like they do, the dog will probably end up being pts, having bitten someone or badly attacked another dog.

If you think it would help, maybe next time you see your neighbour, perhaps have a boxer rescue phone number on you so you can at least see if they are willing to start the process of giving up their dog. Point out again how much time & effort ALL the family will need to put in to help this dog & how unhappy & frustrated the dog must be if it reacts like this.

I hope the situation can be resolved before anybody or any dogs come to harm.

she wouldve got the rescue nos last night as she was wanting to get rid of him last night but dont think her hubby would agree . she saisd they used to muzzle him and take him to the forest but he used to run up to dogs and try and stamp all over them so suggetsed a long line so they had control over him but he could still run BUT have suggested lead walking with muzzle to at least start but made her aware in no uncertain terms it has to be done everyday!! their 12 yr old daughter used to walk him some days but they realised hes too much for her (thank god) but now he gets no walks at all!!
i will try to suggest the boxer rescue again when i see them this is their 3rd dog and none have been walked we moved in and wasnt til 2 years we realised they HAD a dog!!!
my dogs go out the front(its a culdesac) and they play with the kids but im out there with them and whne i say get back indorrs they do but now cant even do that in case the boxer escapes again

If no one was bitten then there may not be much the dog warden/police can do other than give the owner a warning and tell them to control the dog. Might be what the husband needs to convince them that the dog would be better off in a more experienced home though, unless they're really prepared to put the work in. Perhaps you could go around to see the wife again with a list of Boxer rescues and local reputable rescues for her to turn to if they do decide to rehome the dog, so that he does end up in a rescue where they will put the effort into turning him around and finding him an experienced home/foster home, rather than him ending up in the local pound getting worse because he can't expel all his energy or learn to socialise with dogs.

Poor dog How can anyone expect a 2 year old unstimulated, unsocialised boxer to be any different. They need exercise every day. This makes me so angry

Oh dear Another example of people who shouldn't have dogs! I bet that dog would be different if he had the walks, stimulation etc. Poor little soul.
I hope the situation gets resolved and the dog gets a new home where he's treated properly.
I think you gave good advice

A perfect example of irresponsible dog owners who like the idea of having a dog but not the idea of looking after it. I've been walking dogs on my local park for over twenty years and I see it all the time. Someone decides to get a dog, usually a staff. They bring it out once or twice then it's confined in some back yard or garden.
The next time it's brough out for its yearly walk it attacks everything in sight. Your assesment of the dog being bored was spot on. Lazy dog owners will be with us all the time, there's no cure. It's the poor dogs that suffer as well as the neighbours.
