No sound since reinstalling Windows XP - help please

Since I have reinstalled Windows XP. I don't have a volume control to watch any videos etc. I have looked in my computer, Volume control and it says no active mixer devices available. What has happened any help please but very simply put as I haven't got a clue about computers (as most of you know). I have windows media player and have downloaded Quicktime player & itunes but still no sound???

Thanks Kath X
