Combi boilers.....

Hi guys

We've got one of those old fashioned water boilers unfortunately it is not 100% working, it's connected somehow to the heating and so when we heat up the water we also heat up the house - summer was awful last year.....

We paid a technician £50 + to tell us it was broken

So we are looking to get this replaced with a combi.

Does anyone know of reliable combi brands as I've heard that they can be quite difficult to fix. And what do you think the cost to get a combi and installation should be round about?

Thanks

We have a back boiler that is behind the fire and a switch nearby that turns the boiler on to heat the water but we have a thermostat at the back of the living room so that we don't have to have the radiators on but can still heat up the water. Have you not got a thermostat anywhere?

We're looking at boilers too, thinking of the condensor/combi boiler, quite expensive but apparently well worth the money.

We have the same sort of boiler as you MC, but in our airing cupboard is the toggle switch, to either have hot water only or hotwater and heating.

HI guys, thanks for your replies.

Foxy we do have a switch but there seems to be a fault with it as they cross over when they shouldn't, making them come on at the same time - we already knew it was broken so it annoyed us greatly to be told for £50 it was broken, he also didn't know what was wrong with it

Still we've got someone coming over tomorrow to quote us to replace it.

Hi CC, yes we have the same too - takes up a heck of a large space - so will be nice to free it up for sure.

Thank you

We have have had a Baxi Combi for 8 years and the first problem we had was this year right in the middle of that cold spell. All fixed now and they work really well, ours is in the loft so out of the way and you don't have to have a tank either.

we put in a condensing combi boiler ( worcester Bosch) last year when we did up this house. Its fab - it was expensive however we have only had one issue with it - which was a tiny leak ( and the plumbers fault not the boilers) and it was fixed no charge. We have had combi in the past - cheape rmodel and it never worked properly. Would highly recommend the worsester bosch as the top model in terms of quality and capacity.

make sure you get one with a good capacity otherwise when you have your washing machine on - and perhaps run a bath you lose pressure and flow, if you dont have a good capacity

Before you make your mind up on a system have a look at www.est.org.uk, certain local authorities have enery saving grants for new boilers, might be worth looking to see if you apply.
