My view at the moment is a sleeping boxer on the floor next to me ..

I do not have an aversion to any particular breed in terms of encountering them on walks etc.

I have found that, just as in any "group" there are "good, bad and indifferent" (for want of another term) in all breeds/crosses etc.

I'm not wary of any breed in particular whilst on walks. Dexter has been attacked by a couple of border collies when he's on the lead but also met many nice ones and doesnt seem to be phased by them.

I have to admit that Dexter is one of these dogs that will charge at another just to say hello. We have only had him 6 months and not quite sure on his full history. We are attending classes and socialising him with friends dogs to teach him some manners. I also take him out about an hour before dusk when we are usually alone for a run around and I keep an eye out for other people coming onto the field and most of the time get him back on his lead before he sees another dog. If he does make a run for another dog I will get him back asap and apologise to the other owner for his behavoiur and i genuinely feel awful. Luckily the few times this has happened the other owner has been very understanding. I cant let him off his lead very much at the moment due to the amount of fair weather dog walkers about at night but hopefully with more patience and practice he'll get there soon enough.

I also let him say hello to other dogs when he is on the lead but will always ask the owners permission and warn them that he can be boisterous with some dogs.

You own a cocker spaniel, that to me is a small breed.
Id of classed them as mediam?

I'm another one who assesses on body language and the situation. I think we're quite blessed where we are as I've never had more than one bad encounter with a specific breed. I've met bolshy dogs, rude dogs, aggressive dogs and yappy dogs but I've never encountered one breed that was worse than any other.

I think of it this way - for every not-so-nice dog I meet of a particular breed, there are plenty of lovely dogs of the same breed that I have also met. I've met an aggressive GSD who tried to hurt my dog but my neighbour when I was a kid had a lovely GSD and I've met many lovely GSDs on my walks who played nicely with my dog. It seems a little foolish for me to judge a whole breed on a few bad eggs.

I would say a cocker is a small breed.. My dog is roughly the same size as most cockers we meet and she is classed as a Toy breed. Medium to me means a dog roughly the size of a collie.

I try to go by the dogs behaviour...

However, sometimes my heart drops when I see a Lab bounding towards us... They tend to be so bolshy, and jump all over other dogs. Jake hates that so will have a mini-freakout. We do know many perfectly mannered Labs though... although, strangely... the well mannered ones are females and the bolshy ones are males

I am also careful with dogs who have a good bit of extra size over mine...

I don't really have a problem with any breed, but I have found that the smaller they are, the more they are allowed to get away with (and the more horrified their owners are if one of mine shows the slightest interest in the unruly yapping thing trying to get at them).

I too don't really have a problem with any breed and mine is a small Lancashire heeler who does not yap or bark at others and doesn't get away with anything, so not really in the same category as JRT's or other small dogs. Bailiie has been barked at by chihuahua's & JRT's too but we try to just walk past nicely as we've been trained to do .
Bailiie loves to play with other dogs but does know when to back off if she doesn't feel comfortable; her main problem is she likes to make herself appear bigger than what she is when she meets bigger dogs including staffies & rotties & this probably worries me far more than it worries her!

You've posted a very similar thread befOre bad mouthing the same breed, I won't waste my time pointing out what an ill educated view you maintain once again, as feel trying tO reason with you is Pointless. I do so despair at some of your posts though, just like the ridiculous comment aImed at a two year old bag had been savaged that you expected tO be dog savvy. I just don't get any of it, or what threads to start voicing your dislike Of breeds, and done quid often. What do you hoPe to achieve by it all? Oh and cocker spaniel, definitely a small dog and incidentally one I find, well the show bred ones, one of the most un even temPered breeds most people meet. I despair, but like Murf my view of breeds are currently snoring so

Well Luke if she annoys you that much you could aways put her on ignore and if she doesn't like jack russells she is perfectly entitled to her opinion. They are fiesty little b*ggers and generally I find when owned by old people do have the tendency to be a bit too up for it because the owners do find it funny. I used to own a prt who at 8 weeks old ripped a bloody great chunk out of my trousers because I dared to dash up the stairs, so who knows how he'd have turned out without proper training and guidance. As it was he was a lovely friendly dog, great with kids and other dogs but it took effort on my part. Then Frankie a jrt mix given up by his previous owners because he was constantly fighting with the other dog in the house. He came here and tried his antics with Syd and Rio and was soon taught that was not how you behave in this house. Along came Diesel my Staffie and it all kicked off again Frankie had to learn that aggression could not be his default setting otherwise he was going to end up dead. Lucky for him Diesel has really good bite inhibition. So I don't think Pippam deserves to be vilified for commention on the traits of a jrt left without much training because actually I'd agree with her.
I've also owned a cocker spaniel and I would never have classed him as small either, does that make me a moron too? They can be aggressive just like any other dog can but all the ones I meet lately are much smaller than Shannon was but do seem to have lovely temprements. So maybe it just depends on where you walk and what you as an individual experience.
