Affectionate Rosie – A very special lady (Oldies Club, fostered North London)

Rosie is a 12 year old Collie x Labrador girl who came into Oldies Club care after her owner sadly died. Rosie is in an Oldies Club foster home in North London, waiting for someone to offer her a permanent home.

Settled quickly: Rosie settled into her foster carer’s home immediately. She is fine when left alone for a few hours and just settles down for a nap.

Good with dogs; dislikes cats: Rosie is fine with dogs when out on walks. Her foster carer had a lurcher and a whippet visit for an afternoon and she was fine with them after proper introductions. Rosie could live with another old, calm dog.
Rosie dislikes cats and will chase them.

Could live with children of 8+ years old: Rosie’s foster carer tells us “Rosie has been fine with my visiting nieces and is friendly to everyone. However, being an older and quite fragile dog, children would need to be ideally over 8 years and sensible with dogs. Occasionally Rosie will grumble at a visitor but this is managed by distracting her and a tasty treat – there is no aggression there and once she gets to know the person she is fine. This only happens on the odd occasion and there doesn’t seem to be a reason why she doesn’t immediately take to some people.”

Enjoys short, regular walks: Rosie has arthritis and is best walked little and often. Currently, she is walked 3 or 4 times a day for about 20 minutes. Rosie loves to sniff and her walks consist of a gentle stroll, with stops when she finds something interesting to smell. Rosie never strays too far and she is good on the lead, although if she’s sees a cat she will pull.

Enjoys car rides but needs a ramp: As Rosie is very stiff, getting in and out of a car is difficult for her, and she needs a ramp. Otherwise she is fine and enjoys the ride!

Rosie’s favourite pastimes: Rosie is a very intellligent dog and is interested in everything. She loves playing with her squeaky toys and being gently chased around the room! Rosie is very affectionate and gives lovely gentle nudges with her nose. Her other great pleasure is using her sense of smell when out walking.

Rosie’s dislikes: Rosie doesn’t like cats or postmen. She will bark when visitors come to the door but is fine when you show her you know the person.

Rosie’s perfect home: Rosie loves company and would like a fairly quiet home with lots of interaction with her owner. Due to her arthritis, Rosie can’t manage stairs.

Health notes: Rosie is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea treated. Due to arthritis she has a pronounced limp on her right front leg and stiffness in her back legs. Rosie will need ongoing medication for her arthritis and currently she is on one tablet of Previcox a day.

Rosie has had symptoms that are similar to those of colitis, although the vet has not given a definite diagnosis of colitis. Rosie is currently having one tablet of Famotidine 20mg daily and is being assessed. Rosie’s diet also has to be carefully monitored and she is currently doing well on Royal Canin Sensitivity Control Blue Whiting & Tapioca diet.

Rosie has a large, benign fatty lump hanging down from her lower abdomen. This causes her no problems and just means she looks a little saggy!

Foster carer’s summary: Rosie is loving, intelligent, lovable and brave. She has recently lost her owner after 12 years and she was still in grief when she came to live with us. Watching her adapt and get on with her life so bravely has been very moving – she’s a lovely character. She pricks up her ears when you talk to her and is quick to learn new things.

Rosie does require some management of her health issues but she is doing well on her current diet and medication. Rosie repays this care a hundred times over and every day she makes us laugh with her lovely character and affectionate ways.

If you can offer Rosie a permanent home, please refer to our Adoption Procedures for information about the adoption process. You can then contact an Oldies Club rehoming co-ordinator as follows:

Email: rehome@oldies.org.uk

Rosie can be rehomed anywhere in the UK, subject to a satisfactory home visit, but note that you will be required to travel to the foster home to meet her.

If you would love to offer a home to an oldie but your circumstances aren’t suitable, perhaps you would be kind enough to sponsor one of the special oldies we are caring for that, due to health problems, are unlikely to be offered a permanent home.
