My battery lasts about 4-5hrs average..

BUT never leave your battery in while using the laptop on power supply(unless you are charging it) as it wastes the battery

I have the Acer Aspire3000 it's a lovely little laptop i use it all the time and rarely use a PC. the only problem i have with it is the battery only lasts about 1/2 hour. so i normally keep it plugged in and use the mains saves me faffing about losing work or laptop logging off on me.

The Dell laptops are absolutely fine too. We supply Dell laptops to our customers at work and they're cracking as well. Just depends on what you want to spend. The one thing I do know about Dell is that their staff turnover is high at the moment which means the after sales support is not particularly stable but if that's not an issue, you're ok.

Dell Inspiron 1501 for £379 looks good too!

We have a few, as OH uses them as the works model and we inherit old versions. the only thing we have found is the surround around the screen splits, but that might be on the old models. OH new one seems fine.

I use an Acer laptop too (Travelmate series with memory upgrade) and find it great! I must admit though that i very rarely use the battery cause like now-im already sitting in armchair in lounge and have no need to walk about house with it.I tried battery power a few weeks ago and it lasted about 1 hr or so,but i dont have any eco settings like brightness turned down.
