post-TPLO surgery

My 95# golden retriever just had TPLO surgery, and we bought a sling from the vet to support him for the next 2 weeks until his check-up. I am very nervous about hurting him and can't get a clear answer on the purpose of the sling..is it to take weight off his back leg (very hard to lift that much weight and he won't urinate or poop until I let go of it and he can move off a few yards) or just to keep him stable so he doesn't fall...
Any experience with this? Help much appreciated from this newly anxious caregiver...

Here's what I found on a website about TPLO surgery. Hope it answers your questions
A sling has been dispensed for you to assist your pet in rising, and walking on slippery floors or stairs. You do not have to support your pet's weight with the sling. It is to help balance him/her should he/she slip. Please use the sling at all times when your pet is not on secure footing.

My last dog Ozzy (RIP) - had a cruciate op and it was successful too. He had to have cage rest for quite a few weeks, his crate was invaluable to us, do you have one?

When he was strong enough he went for tiny walks, just to keep the muscle from wasting, then he went on to have the time built up until he could almost walk as far as he could before.

It is a slow process, but you will get there in the end, just don't rush things, I think that is where some people go wrong
