Was not in reference to anything you said HouseDog I agree entirely with most of what you said my reply was to Lel who suggested a new thread about whether show dogs are of a higher standard Re-read my post I think you will see that.

Being one who does show (but who is also a cynic)
The dog constantly winning does not necessarily reflect the better dog in the breed (but it can - depending upon particular dog and particular judge)

Neither is a pet dog inferior to the show dog
after all you can have two pups and one is chosen to be shown while the other goes to a pet home. The *pet* can be far superior to the other and Im sure the majority of people realise that
but some people *dont* realise that

My suggestion of having a BREED EXPERT looking at the dog and giving an assessment is based on the fact that people that are in the showing scene tend to be slighty more interested in getting something that is true to the breed standard, I agree it is open to interpretation dependant upon whos the judge and whos the owner of the dog, that can infulence the outcome of a line up,. but the fact remains, if you have a particular dog, and in YOUR mind it is nice, what if you know nothing about the breed apart from actually just owning one, is that a reason to breed? surely not!!! I agree there are many dogs that have gone to pet homes that would look brilliant in the showring, but why did they go to pet homes in the first place, is it because they have an undershot/overshot jaw for example that is not seen by the naked eye, I still stand by what I say, just because you have a "nice dog" is not reason to breed, and to ask someone to find a sire for your bitch, without giving any details of the background/bloodline. Basically this is just a matter of I have such a such a breed someone round the corner has the same breed lets mate them, get some pups and make some money IMO

In my opinion stud dogs were in use long before any dog shows were thought of, these dogs were used in the hope that they would pass on their traits to any offspring, in todays canines there are many top stud dogs who have never been shown or gone over by a breed specialist, Lurchers, Terriers, Fox hounds, Salukis, Greyhounds, to name a few, these studs are used because of what they have achieved in there choosen field, not because someone thinks they are good.
