He finally did it!

Oscar made his first Holy Communion today (a big thing for Roman Catholics, for those who don't know).

After almost 4 weeks of trying to get hold of his catechist who refused to call back, after being told he may not be allowed to do it, after having the dates swapped by the school then his father changing weekends, I was starting to panic that Oscsr wouldn't be able to do it with the rest of his year group.

But today he did it. I'll post up a piccie when I've recharged the camera.

So now he has to be a "good Catholic boy" - yeah right, we'll see how long that lasts!!

Ah how lovely, when my daughter had hers, via the school, I made her dress which was very different from everyone else's.

It was a white dropped waist dress with a double offset sailor collar.

And she had a white headband/fascinator type doo dah.

And I bought her a triple cross, white, yellow and rose gold, again offset.

(That was when I was the Persil Mum)

She was the only one without a veil and blancmange dress.

Even the priest commented on it (in a complimentary manner).

That was over 20 years ago, you have made me feel VERY old!

Aw, brings back memories of my daughter in her simple unfussy white dress and little tiara at her service. The lengths that some of the mums went to reminds me now of my big fat gypsy wedding!!!!

Some of the dresses I saw were so intricate - made me kinda pleased I have a Son. Very simple - grey trousers, white shirt (white had to be bought as his school uniform shirts are blue) and a red communion tie (very different from a school or ordinary tie apparently ).

The Church provided the sash, courtesy of the monks who still live and work at the Friary behind the main Church. UInfortunately we had to return those and I didn't get a picture with the gold detail on the ends.

Still, we tried to be good. Went to Mass this morning but Oscar couldn't stand the thought of having another dose of (in his words) "cardboard"! I don't blame him, the "bread" isn't exactly tasty and when you don't have a drink with you, it can be incredibly dry. So this morning he received a blessing from the priest which he seemed quite happy with.
