I think people should get(or at least try) their dog out at least once a day. For those who dont I wouldnt say its cruel as such without knowing the full story as there is often reasons why, and if you cant at least play some mental games inside. Those who are just to lazy have no excuse though.

Oh if I didn't walk Dougal he would eat things...like remote controls, cables...

It's better for them to be walked, I think it's better for the owner as well. I've got down to a size 8 jeans cause of the amount of walking I've done since I got Dougal. It's stimulating for the dog as well, all those smells, trees, sticks, other dogs, horses, Dougal is fascinated by horses, he just cannot figure out what they are.

Fair enough if you're disabled or poorly, but not taking the mutt out for a walk at least once everyday is pretty unfair on the dog imo.

shall we take cover together? Why not get a goldfish if you don`t exercise your dog? Or cat? There are loads of pets suitable for sedentary or housebound folks - why make an active animal suffer?

there is a woman here and she got a little mobility scooter so she could get out and walk her pup
its not ideal but its better than nothing - and good on her
agree with everyone, in a garden is nothing like a walk, the sights and more importantly the smells, having new experiences and catching up with old friends
and it is so good for us too - 2 years ago I knew 1 person in our street, now I consider many of them good friends

If you cant walk a dog or find some way to have it walked then you shouldnt have a dog - end of!!
and if the RSPCA cannot do anything about it then the law should be changed, not all dogs need 8 hours walking a day but all dogs need out
I dont feel Ben has had a good walk if he dosent meet his friends and have a good run about at least once a day - I know that is not possible for all dogs but if it is possible it is such a joy for both dog and owner

i dont think its fair - unless you have about 10 acres of gardens for your dog to run in!!!

even if you did they still miss out on other sights and smells of the world.......

i would never not walk my dog though........

I would have no house left if i didnt walk D, his walks i'm sure are the highlight of his day, he loves to be out and about meeting other dogs and people.

He would go stir crazy being stuck in the house all day every day so, yes i do think its cruel. There is no excuse, if you cannot walk the dog yourself there is plenty of help out there i.e. dog walkers.

But they could have got the dog, walked it and then had problems which prevented it? Not getting at you but there is many reasons why and its not always clear cut.

Then get someone else to walk the dog! Having seen the sad results - overweight, claws growing into feet, unsocialised, terrified of new experiences, stir-crazy dogs, how can you not recognise it as cruelty?

i,v been in the situation when after an operation on my knee, i was unable to walk my dog for about 4 weeks, i paid a dog walker to come everyday and walk hooch, money was tight, because i was off work, but i never thought about that. as far as i'm concerned having a daily walk is part of looking after the dogs well being.

And if you cant get someone to walk it, afterall alot of people dont like dogs.

The point I am making is there is 101 reasons why a dog may not go out daily and its not always cruel, there will be many times it is cruel and the owners are idiots, but not always. So I would never put all non-walked dogs under the same blanket.
