Even in a rescue kennel there are people around and other dogs and the dogs there are in a kennel and have freedom of movement they are not shut in a cage all day.

If I was a dog I would prefer the rescue kennel to a cage and an absentee owner.

Ok then let's everybody wait until we retire before we own dogs, how many more 1000s of dogs would be in rescue then because there would be no homes for them

And even now my dog isn't shut in his cage and even when my gf is home he gets in his cage when I walk out the door and he will NOT come out until I get home, I would love it if I could spend 10 hours led on my bed instead of having to work

Some dogs are fine left home alone with freedom to move around . That is not the same as being left home alone and shut in a cage, you would need a hell of a big cage for a Lab to move around in .

It is asking for behavioural problems to leave a gundog shut in a cage for long periods on a regular basis.

Marley, I meant 10 hours without having a break .
Crates are a recent thing . We didnt have them in olden times and used baby pens for puppies when unsupervised until they were housetrained .
I have used crates at night for my rescue dogs but not in the daytime . I just dont like to see dogs restricted like that , its my own personal thing .

people have different life styles , couples with children and one partner works full time and one part time , shift workers on different shifts , early retirement , full time workers have
dog wlker or doggy day care or relative or neighbour walks dog . people come home at lunch time and work near to home so they dont spend so much time travelling.

My post seems to have disappeared, perhaps while the thread was being moved. I said I found it surprising the shelter were releasing the dog after only having it a few days and knowing little about it's temperament. Also the new owner needs to spend more time getting to know the dog so to ascertain it's needs.

My dog had no break and now he isn't shut in he still doesn't have a break, he doesn't get up he won't go out, he lies abd he sleeps, what is the difference between a dog sleeping In a crate during the day and a dog sleeping in one all night ?

I have had dogs that were happy to be alone if the need arose and slept in a bed in a crate with the door open not shut in. They were habituated to being left alone from being puppies not rescue dogs who may have had previous problems with separation anxiety.

Why is it that many dogs have to be crated as adults? I get that puppies need to be restricted for safety and house training but how necessary is it for older dogs .
