My latest Hedgehog

I found him about a week ago wandering around the road ,sadly one of his brothers or sisters was squashed nearby
He was very skinny so brought him home for the winter (as I have been doing with undersized hedgehogs for years),the first few days he barely ate anything and I thought I was going to lose him ,thankfully he is eating now but only if I feed him by hand ,so I have to mush up cat food and feed it to him from a syringe ,He seems fine no sign of injury or illness but I will prob get him into the vet tomorrow just incase there is any underlying reason for him not wanting to eat himself

Feeding

Kira investigating

Me too, I just love these little creatures. Ashlady just hand reared 3 babies that came to her from her local hedgehog rescue, and she managed to get them all up to weight and they've left. Mind you, knowing the luxuries they had there I'm sure they'll be back!!!

Good luck with this little one

They get friendly quite quickly and dont roll up or try to spike you once they are used to you ,then you can pick them up without getting jabbed too much you can even stroke them when they put their spikes down

I'm not sure on age ,but am sure its too small and young to survive the winter hibernation

i found an excellent site, from what i can gather they have to weigh 600g to be able to hibernate?
i found a chart that gives the age in weeks and then the suggested weight for that age - bit cool really!
i weighed spike and he/she(!!) was just under 300g, so definatly not able to hibernate and very little age wise!

thanks for all your help by the way.

p.s Do they bite?

They're just the sweetest little creatures!
'Sparky' found five in the space of a week out in our garden and in our neighbours too. Unfortunately in all cases he tried to eat them and made a real mess of his muzzle in doing so. However no apparent damage to the little spikey boys; Hedgehogs 5 - Patterdale 0. I lifted them into an adjacent wood and they scurried away none the worse for the experience. It's been a good year for Hedgehog spotting!
