What's a talbot?

I was walking the dogs the other day when yet another person asked me which breed they were (Aren't dallies one of the best recognised breeds going??)

But he asked 'are they dalmatians or talbots?' I said they were dallies, he complimented them and left...

But he left me wondering... what is a talbot??

From Wikipedia:

The Talbot Hound was a snow white hunting dog in Great Britain with keen smell that was of such large stature that it was credited with being capable of bringing down a white stag in the midst of winter.

William the Conqueror is credited with bringing the Talbot to Britain in the eleventh century A.D. Though the breed is now extinct, it is thought to be a more recent ancestor of the modern-day beagle.

The term "talbot" is used in heraldry to refer to a hunting dog

Not sure why he though a very obviously spotty dog was a "snow white hunting hound", ancestor of the modern day beagle though!

Talbots were a breeds belonging to the hound group
My aunt had a lovely picture of one. You often hear of pubs and inns called 'The Talbot' there are quiet a few round here.

Here is a picture of a Talbot on an Inn sign.
