As most ancient 'breeds' were developed on the go, trying to recreate a 'type' based on so many conflicting stories and pictures from history is at best wishful. Having read a few old texts about developing dogs for the hunt etc, the breed standard for many working dogs was simply the ones which performed the task best.

It is also implied that the Alaunt was the ancestor of the livestock guarding dogs of the transhumance, and these new dogs seem not to resemble them in any way.

breeding a cross breed(which there are a plenty round here that look like that ) so they can charge extortionate amounts of money for...at the same price as a saarloos in this country

I guess if people buy enough then they will become a 'breed'

I have a dog that, I am told, was bred as a boar hunting dog. He is a Bauceron (ancient breed) crossed with a Great Dane. The result is a muscular dog, great dane size with incredible stamina and amazing hunting skills. May be I should market them as a new breed?

Ancient breton war dog. (chien de guerre de bretagne) sounds good to me! I negotiated very hard with his owner when I got him and settled on a nice round figure! Now I have invented the breed I think it could become very pricy indeed!

Here is my attempt at a new old breed: this is the two legged version designed to look like its ancient extinct ancestor: the velociraptor
