3rd Vaccinations for rotties in particular????

Ok, so took Hades in for his second vaccinations today. The vet recommended he have a 3rd vaccination in 3 weeks time since apparently rotties tend to hold onto their mothers immunity for longer and are therefore at a higher risk of getting Parvo. He said sometimes even the 2nd vaccination isnt effective and they recommend a 3rd.

However, this means he wont be able to go outside for another 4 weeks.

So far ive been carrying him everywhere and he comes to training twice a week to my indoor classes, so socialisation isnt too much of an issue. But another 4 weeks of carrying him? I have no doubt that I wont be able to carry him much longer as he is very heavy already!

Of course, if i stuck to the 2 vacc rule, he'd be allowed out in 7 to 10 days.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Obviously probably better safe than sorry, but should I take him out after his 2nd vacc has had time to take affect and then get his 3rd done in 3 weeks as well? Or should I just keep him in?

Never heard of this, then again, not had a Rottie pup. Seems odd though - if that was the case then why vaccinate so early, why not delay the first and second vaccs by a week or two so that the chances of the vaccs being effective/not cancelled out by mum's immunity are higher? I would maybe contact some Rottie breeders and speak to another vet practise to see what they say as it sounds quite odd.

I would certainly not be happy with giving a pup 3 doses of the vaccine. The vet if this was the case should have delayed starting the vaccines in the first place.
I would phone round some other vets and ask thier policy on vaccinating Rottie pups. Don't tell them what you have been told though so they can't be swayed into sticking by a fellow vet.

I would want any pup out and about ASAP. Our vet had a poster up that said 'Socialisation is vaccination against behaviour problems'.

Every pup I have had has been out and about as soon as I have had them---IMO far more important than anything else.

I've heard of the 3rd vaccination for Rotts but was never offered it by my vet when my Rott was a puppy.

I have a rottie she is 18 month old now I got her at 6 week and she only had two vaccinations, the vet never mentioned giving three doses, as like you say I dont think i would of been able to carry her around for much longer if she had to have three vaccinations, she did get rather heavy for carrying around lots

Vaccines often fail with rottweilers due to their genetics, that is most likely the reason your vet has suggested a 3rd vacc. Personally I would go with the 2 and then ask for an antibody titre test to see whether he has responded to the vaccine. If he has, all is well and he doesnt need another vacc, if not, he will need another vaccination injection.

I would definitely check your boy is covered after the two vaccines though before ruling out or in the suggested 3rd injection.

We routinely give three rounds of vaccines 3-4 weeks apart, starting at 8 weeks here, to all puppies. Not the end of the world. Rotts and Pits are so much more likely to get parvo, well worth it I would say.
