Zoo vet at large

Im just watching this and there is a family that has just taken in a 12week old puppy for his pup injections, the pup started bitting the vet so he advised and demostrated flipping the pup on its back and holding it there until it stopped bitting, or holding its mouth firmly shut to stop it biting! I couldnt help but feel that was crap advice.

you may be right about it being crap advice but it was considered the norm as was ear biting and rubbing a dogs nose in its own wee, some people have not moved on.

Wasn't the Zoo Vet At Large series filmed some years ago now?

I sat watching Its Me or the Dog (old series, 2006 I think) with my mum this week, and was able to tell her that the Pack Leader thing is waaaaay out of date now (when her jaw dropped open at Victoria Stilwell eating crisps out of a dog's bowl), and that things have changed a lot in the last few years with regard to canine ethology.

I wouldn't expect a vet who trained many years ago, and specialised in exotics, to be at the forefront of dog behaviour and training.

BTW mum used to come with me to dog club when I was in my late teens training our family dogs, and saw all the old choke & jerk stuff... she really can't believe how well mannered and well trained Merlin is, and all done so differently from what we once did.

Im not sure when it was filmed, but still how many new time owners watch these programmes and get ideas! When in fact the methods are out of date, and cause more problems than good if you havent a clue what your doing.

I`ve heard protests about this guy before. He`s very old school.
Unfortunately, people assume Vets are experts on all things to do with animals, including feeding and training. Which they`re not, unless they`ve undergone further study.

I've heard of this before, but not seen it...was this the episode where the zoo vet also says that if this is not done, the pup will end up being a biter or something along those lines?

Dear me. Vets are respected by the viewing public, and IMO should make it their business to know they are up to date with what they are talking about....

Yes he said something along the lines of if you dont teach pup your pack leader now, and stop it biting then, the pup will go on to attack people seriously later on in life!
