Bernese have double coats and are mostly black, I wouldn't shave Ollie as his coat is designed as someone else mentioned to help cool him in hot weather as much as warm him in cold weather. It would not grow back so good either I wouldn't want to chance it. He has the option of shade and cool places to lay and we walk him late and early and if he doesn't want to walk he doesn't.

You can buy lots of stripping products now that are really good at getting rid of lose hair. I have a Goldie who comes every 8 weeks and I use a coat king on him to get rid of the lose hair as his owners cant cope with the mess.

Why not use a blaster to lift the coat once it has started shedding? The initial outlay can be expensive but it makes such a difference to the shedding in the house.
