Thalidomide

Iam aware of the drug, sold in the 1950s as a cure for morning sickness, but don't know much else .....

How the hell did they ever allow this drug to be used ,do you know any one who was affected by it ?

There are stories about the drug company issuing an apology in the news today which got me thinking ....

I know there was millions paid out in compensation...

An apology this late on is surely just insulting more than anything.

I did a presentation it for uni. They tested it on rats with no ill effects, what they didnt know then was that the rats metabolised the drug differently to humans

Oh! That's no surprise then!

Amazing how they thought it was ok on rats so must be ok on humans!

And by the time it was realised that Thalidomide was the cause of all the birth deformities and took it off the market, it was tragically far too late.

Yup. My research found that it was hailed as some sort of wonder drug and was prescribed all over the world very quickly

Thalidomide is currently being used as a treatment for cancer, now that they have discovered it's mechanism of action.

It all more or less kicked off just before I reached my teens.........rather selfishly I thank my lucky stars that I was born pre Thalidomide prescription.

Survivors who were affected by this must feel absolutely outraged and understandably bitter by the drug company's seeming lack of compassion or responsibility.
