I think the question should be "I've just had a look on a rescue site...a 9wk old pup given up for rehoming already, why?!"
I know that early neutering is not ideal but I imagine it is a tough call for rescues - neuter early so that the pup is ready to go to a new home ASAP and there is absolutely zilch chance of it being used for breeding (or accidentally mating another and adding to the population problem) or rehome it unneutered and hope the adopters follow through on a neutering contract (and before any accidents)
At the end of the day, rescues are mopping up after other people - they don't choose for 9 week old puppies to be unwanted and in need of a rescue space.

because no matter how many checks and home visits they do they can not be sure 100% an accident wont happen.

I cant find any reference to it on their site ...
I did see this though,...
The Mayhew offers low cost neutering, microchipping & vaccinations to all dogs, cats and rabbits and provides free neutering services for Bull breeds and cats that are eligible for the C4 scheme;

There is no such thing as an accidental mating-they are negligent owners allowing the bitch to be near a dog whilst in season & even if the season was a silent one there are steps that can be taken to prevent the litter being born.

The RSPCA have castrated the puppies born in their kennels at 8 weeks of age for years here & the result is a lot of very fine boned overly tall males that are very attractive to other male dog

There are also inexperienced owners who dont know a female can be mated while inside a crate or tru a fence if she is willing and helpful enough
Accidents DO happen
Also there are people - far to many of them - who try and 'sneak' a litter out of their pup before they have to go back to the shelter and get them neutered at 6 months old or whatever the rules are

Yes it may not be ideal to neuter that early but I can understant the rescues thinking - possibly slightly leggy dogs with the chance that other males find them attractive (which works out well for my Ben, so often an owner is surprised cos their male hates all other males but is calm around Ben) compared to a litter of however many pups from goodness knows what parents

Of course it isnt ideal - put a pup in rescue at that age isnt ideal either and if early neutering prevents lots more of them then imo the risk/reward is worth it

I think it is disgusting that they are neutering pups at 9 WEEKS old. Truly awful.

Agree. And I think vets are being irresponsibly complicit - and should, if the dog suffers from disease that can be attributed to prepubescent neutering later in life, be sued. They should know better.
