Microsoft Office help

Hi folks,

The new PC is up and running, but I've lost all my Microsoft programmes in the crash.

I need Microsft Office (I guess) and can't quite believe how expensive it is. There's a "Homeand Student" one that's only £99.99 but it doesn't include Outlook, which I need.

All the ones with Outlook run at over £300

Surely not........

Help!

Vicki - if your company use microsoft office and if they are willing to co-operate, you might be able to get a copy much, much cheaper.

I'm just going to see if I can find the details for you..

ETA - ok its called Microsoft's Home Use Program. If your company is registered for this and if they ok you as a home user, you only need to pay something £10! Why not have a word with your work before forking out the full cost. It might well be that they're not entitled to it, but certainly worth a shot.

Don't get your hopes up just yet. Not every company is registered for it and I don't know what they would need to do to be able to - so unfortunately you still might have to buy the full package. Definitely worth checking out first though

MS Office can be made compatible with the open document standard OO.o uses and OO.o can save in Office formats. Mrs. C uses OO.o exclusively at home (No MS Office in our house!) and manages to do everything she needs in her role as a Uni lecturer. This includes word processing, spreadsheets and presentations. So, in short, yes it is very compatible for the type of files most people work with day-to-day. Outstanding value for money when compared to MS Office...

Bill Gates once wrote an open letter to hobbyists where he basically berated people who copied (proprietary) software to share among their friends. For once, I agree with him. If you want to use proprietary software then it's your choice and you should pay for it, not steal it. If you want free as in beer and as in speech software then it is available for you. Use it and if it suits your needs, contribute by promoting it, donating money etc.
