Toros went in for key hole spey

Toro was booked in this morning, had a double appointment because of recent niggles with her health...the good news is, she does not have luxating patella, and does not have a heart murmur, the recent lameness we think is due to an old back injury between the shoulder blades as she was showing signs of discomfort in that area when he was examining her,the surgeon specialises in bones n joints and is more than happy to deal with Toro in the future if I feel I need to use him...
He gave a clean bill of health to go ahead with the spey, gave us a run down on what he'd be doing and said if in the future Toro should need further surgery either relating to the key hole speying or needing her uterus removed it would be done for free !!!

Now I'm just sitting biting nails woryying and drinking tea, waiting for a phone call !

I wondered that too. Would that not still leave her susceptible to pyo? Just curious.

I'm sure she will be fine.

I dont think it does due to the fact that she will no longer ovulate and uterine cancer in dogs is pretty rare.

I've always had my bitches spayed in the conventional way with removal of everything - the particular vet i use spays through a tiny wound so we have never had any problems. I can see the advantages of key hole though.

Hope your girlie is ok.

Thanks for the support everyone, very much appreciated...I have to pick Toro up at 4.30, shes doing fine xx

Think its because its key hole surgery the uterus stays, if you look at a diagram of the uterus and ovaries, the ovaries are quite high up so would maybe make taking the uterus out awkward...obviously there is no guarantees about the uterus not becoming infected but they do need the ovaries producing hormones to highten the risk of pyos ect...this vets been carrying out the procedure for 4 yrs now and hasn't had any cases going back because of problems with the uterus...
