So why was it eventually taken out of use?

The iron within the concrete rusted and got so bad the walls started crumbling

Fascinating place. What did it smell of?

Just think, there must be 20 or more uninhabited islands off the West coast of Scotland, both larger and smaller than Alcartraz, all of them ideal for prisons, surely one or two could be used for the ever expanding number of prisnors in UK.

And I'm sure we could build a prison using modern steel reinforcement so that the walls didn't fall down

We were there in 2010, not so much a case of smell but atmosphere.
One could not help getting a feeling of dispair of the prisoners even though we were only visiting.

Not only were they locked up but 2000 yards away across the bay they could hear music and women laughing which must have tormented them

Putting up a video of the governors private area and showing how close to the mainland Alcatraz is

Holy crap that is close. Must have been torture looking at that every day.
