Your second point I think is true. however, I think, in reality it is mostly the case people are just looking for information and when they get it they aren't interested anymore as most people simply aren't interested in internet discussion forums . Specially more so nowadays since social media started. Its still rude not to come back and update and say thank you though .

your first point is very very rare , as these days people generally misuse the term troll by merely applying it to people that hold views unpopular to most people on the site.
you see this happen on most discussion forums now , as sites develop a group culture and if someone, especially if new , says something regarded as off message, people tend to clan up against them . Calling them a troll is just one of the methods.

when trolls are actually people that post things they don't necessarily believe in just to get a rise for fUN. you get two versions. - bored adolescent who just write stuff about Tom daleys dad for example , or clever articulate folk whom make propositions engaging others in arounded yet sly intellectual way as a form of intellectual oneupmanship .


But people that post unpopular views obviously aren't trolls as they believe in what they are saying

its weak if someone accuses them of trollism, for if there ideas were so erroneous, one would need only to explain how and why sticking to one's own counter arguments and beliefs
