How do you prevent/stop barking?

Millie gets 40 minute walks every day and sometimes we go for an hour, I've mixed in some light jogging too and she goes off lead. She is well behaved and since I put her on the lead in more or less the same spot when its time to go home she comes back every time. Often I don't even have to call her she either races to her bench and waits for me or I show her a treat and she comes straight over without a fuss.

We play plenty of stimulating games and she is now really good at finding treats. She is not very interested in toys but has recently all on her own started to retrieve some of the post instead of eat it ^^

The problem we are having is her barking! We have a chain link fence so the problem is she can see everything in that garden. We can't really put up a propper fence as their are trees in the way so I am stuck as to what to do.

Marlie the collie is harmless he's a big softie and its quite frustrating because he will try to come under and that is when Millie starts to bark him in a really hysterical way. It bothers me because once she starts to bark she won't listen and will not rest once he tries to come through. He has never succeeded as once his owner calls him he runs back. All I can do is collect her and put her back in the house till I have finnished outside.

I'd like her to be out with me how do I keep her attention? How do you get a dogs attention once they start to bark?

Yes but less hystericlly its more like a normal bark but when she's the collie trying to come through the gap (its pretty low I don't think he could get through it)) she gets very hysterical about it.

You need to work on that first before you will have any chance of control outside at a fence where another dog intruder in encroaching it's play area.

First get a rock solid sit or down, I would go for a down for this one. Feeding time - dog only gets fed if it goes down and stays down. Practice on walks, get the dog to go down every 20 or 30 yards and when you've got it at a distance your starting to get a solid down.

When the door goes, praise the dog the microsecond it stops barking and persist at that. Start to introduce down as well. Eventually you should have a dog that go will go down when the door goes.

When your happy with that start going outside again. If the other dog is near the fence use similar training.

That's what I would try anyway.

Thank you but I all ready train her at breakfast times and she has a really good down, a really good sit too.

She is very well trained when their are no distractions the problem is getting her attention once she is fully distracted by something.

Brill, I would move straight on to praise as soon as it stops and still start with the door before you can expect it to work in the garden

This may well work as I succeeded in stopping her bitting me during grooming sessions by praising her when she stopped now she really enjoys a dry down with the towel and a brush and lean to me for more ^^

When we first had Ben and he barked at the gate when things went pass I would stand behind him a wave a really nice treat under his nose .The minute he was distracted and went for treat said thankyou Ben and took him away .Practiced this so as soon as I said thankyou he would look to me for treat and stop barking m.Then moved further away from him and gate said thankyou when he barked and he would then come to me for treat. Now if hes barking at gate and Im indoors I shout thankyou and he stops barking and comes in for treat.Did this with last dog as well and worked alyhough not saying it works for every dog.I always make sure I have a few treats in my pocket if I in the garden so if he starts barking I can say thankyou and he stops.

Outside I just threaten them with the hose pipe, hold it as though I'm going to squirt them and I get instant silence. If they should persist they get a warning shot about 3 feet in front of them and they then decide it's not worth the trouble.
