being a rescue bruno wasnt the easiest to train - only thing we have really taught him is paw, sit and down/off.
He chooses when to obey !!

Would love to go to classes but his dog aggression doesnt allow it. have never really found a way to improve that either.

I train my own dogs and hold weekly classes for others, I guess everything I do with my dogs could be classed as training, if you know what I mean
only down side about running a training club is you often forget to do as much with your own dogs
I use a clicker, traditional training methods and also some of the methods I use to train horses works great on dogs, I like liberty training, my attitude is if it works fine, it don't matter how you get there as long as you DO get there, I am not big on the B Woodhouse way of doing things I like to think we have came out of the dark ages

Missy was not really trained when I got her at 18 months. I joined a training class but the week after I got her, she came into season. So, she missed the next 4 classes and I did some training at home. Once back at the classes, she did most things very well. We passed our beginner's course with flying colours. I couldn't do the next class though as it started at 8 pm and I work nightshift. I would only be able to do training classes at the weekend, but I can only find trainers who do weekday evening classes. The main reason I would prefer classes is that Missy gets hyper when she meets other dogs. She used to be the same with people, wanting to rush up to everyone she met. I "cured" this by taking her to Tesco every week and just sitting outside the door. So , in answer to the original question, I do my training at home just now until I can find a class run on weekends.

Vegas is a rescue and i got him at 13 months old,but he only really had the basics taught to him like sit/give paw prior to me getting him.His recall was terrible, continually jumped up at people and was really like a teenage hooligan.

I just went right back to basics with his training and treated him as if he was a little puppy.Training an adolescent dog isnt as easy as a pup and especially so when the previous owners have allowed him to get away with blue murder, but we got there in the end.

Initially,i tried clicker training him for recall, but he didnt take much notice of it so i substituted it for a dog whistle which worked perfectly. Its very rewarding seeing a dog which no one wanted in the rescue centre develop into a wonderful companion.

Dont get me wrong,Vegas is still a wild card and i do need to keep ontop of him,but his recall is 100% and his behaviour is much better.

I still wouldnt change his personality for the world!

Mine are all rescues who came untrained, which was good as it meant they were blank slates for me to work with my way, though the fact will always remain that had their original owners gone to puppy classes and basic obedience, [ as they obviously were clueless themselves about training ], each of those first owners would have ended up with the fanastic dogs which I have now.
If they could over come so much for me, imagine how amazing they would have been for their original owners from the beginning without having developed any issues because of being brought up well had that happened for them...

If I ever took on a pup, [ the only possibility for me to ever have a pup really would be a deaf rescue pup one day, I will only ever have rescues myself ], I would take him or her to puppy classes for socialisation as well as early exposure to agility atmosphere where I`m the instructor anyway so thats easy enough , and to basic obedience, again for the vital early socialisation, but as an experienced basic trainer myself anyway, I would never agree to any training methods I dissaprove of so it would have to be a very good Obedience club for me to go, as I believe not going to a club is better than going to a `bad` club if you see what I mean.
