Samson

Samson is a twenty-month-old, male American Bulldog, who was returned to The Mayhew because his owners couldn't cope with him. He has an amazing personality - full of love, fun and bounce in equal measure. He is good with other dogs but can be a little over-boisterous and dominant for some dogs who cannot match his size and sense of fun. Ideally he should be homed with a confident female, larger than himself otherwise we would prefer to rehome him as an only dog. He is strong on his lead and will need to be trained not to pull. When off his lead, he has perfect recall. This lively boy will need at least two hours of off-lead exercise every day. His new guardians will be taking on a thirteen-year commitment, which must not be taken lightly.

Samson is eager to please, knowing all the basic commands and being very responsive but given an inch he will take a mile! His new guardians will need to continue his training by taking him to training classes. He is toilet-trained and can be left alone for up to four hours without any problems. He was encouraged to play too rough in his previous home and will need to be taught appropriate boundaries now that he is such a big boy. He is looking for a new home with an experienced guardian who has owned large Bull breeds, if not American Bulldogs, before. He is fine with sensible children, but owing to his size and ebullience, he cannot be homed with children, visiting children would be fine.

Samson is an incredibly affectionate dog, who just loves to be cuddled, stroked and talked to, and who loves everyone he meets. He also loves his food and will do anything for a treat. This will come in handy when teaching him that jumping up to say hello and play fighting is simply not on any more at his age. He also loves his tug-toys and prefers to have a person to play with, though he is quite happy to entertain himself too. This boy's temperament is superb. A real heart-throb.
