nothing helps really and hearing family can make it worse.
The only way to prevent it is to belong......

if you intend to stay, put all your heart into the place you are in and make it your own so that you belong .. then you will no longer be so homesick because that place will become your home

How long have you been in the UK and will you ever go back to New Zealand? My uncle emigrated to New Zealand before I was born and we haven't seen him since 
I don't get homesick much because I'm always home
