the word gamenes when used in connection with dogs bred for the pit means one thing ..the dogs mental strength to cross the scratch line in a pit during a dogfight especially when the dog itself is losing the fight ,injured or exhaused it will cross the scratch line to attack its opponent ......it is the willingness to cross the scratchline that is important in a pitfight lots of pitfights where won and lost on this ability
A dogfight was run like this there was one dog in opposite corners of the pit with a scratchline drawn through the middle of the pit ...one dog was released and had to cross the scratchline to attack its opponent in the opposite corner when the released dog crossed the scratchline and only then was the other dog released to defend itself after this the dogs took turns to scratch ...there was no timelimits or rounds in a pitfight so when to scratch was decided by what was termed as a turn of the head ...this meant that one of the dogs had turned its head away from its opponent so the opposite corner called to the referee for a break and the dogs were seperated to do this breaking sticks were forced into the dogs mouths and twisted to make them release their opponent they then retired to their corners were they had a minutes break ...the dog whose turn it was to scratch was then released and the fight resumed ....the pitfight was carried out like this until a dog either refused to cross the scratchline or killed its opponent or the handler decided his dog had had enough
So in relation to pitdogs gameness means only one thing the mental ability to cross the scratchline no matter what

Doglistener, I just did a search for "gameness" and came up with the same results as for "game". That was a very informative post, but I must admit to not being able to read it all, very unnerving . Thank you though for posting at such length . I get the feeling peoples interpretation of gameness is based on their own experiences and possibly the breed they are involved in. Having a look at the posters who agree with the dictionary definition, possible regional differences also apply, as all were Scottish

Terrifying

The mentality of the people on this board confirms your worst fears the bull breeds are going no doubt about is if these are the ambassadors for the breed.

However pignose got the same reception as I did on this board sneered at and told he knew feck all.

first of all Im a "she" not a he and secondly, my dogs dont snarl/lunge/growl etc because they are brought up with other dogs, well trained and well socialised NOT because they are wanting do dismember the other dog as you so eloquently put it

Please get your facts right before you post Stan
you have never met me or my dogs so how do you know anything about what is going on in their heads when they meet another dog thats aggressive

or are you psychotic as well as your many other talents now?
(oops meant to say psychic sorry about the typo there )

Stan, don't you mean the people on that board?? I hope you are not having a dig at my members!! I'm fairly sure it was a typing error on your behalf, but I'm sure you'll excuse me for flagging this up and standing by my members.

In addition I don't think it's fair to compare 'us' to that board because you were 'also' told you knew 'feck all' - which if I remember rightly was said after the post you made where you stated you could tell which breeds were in 'any' cross (although you later admitted this was a typing error).

Well now we all know what gameness means (in relation to any dog bred to fight, namely the staff + american pit) , so for the love of god, hopefully people will stop saying "game dogs are vicious" and stuff like that.

I looked at the link before it was closed down and I was refering to the people and what they were saying hence the reference to pignose who was a person that was qyestioning the sport of dogfighting.

I was fairly certain that was the case, but your post could have been taken either way so I wanted to clarify/highlight that you weren't actually reffering to our Dogwebbers.

(p.s. I sent you a PM a little while ago, did you get it?)
