Pet Insurance

My four year old dogue de bordeaux is currently insured via tesco I have just received the renewal and it has gone up by £15 per month. they have also given me a quote for my new dogue de Bordeaux pup and thay want £63 per month for him which means I would be paying £103 per month for both dogs. Can anyone recommend another good insurance company

I was with Sainsbury's with my late bitch Cherry and they were really good when I had to claim lots with her cataract operations and glaucoma problems.

As my 2 dogs are older dogs now (10 and 9) I have shopped around as they don't have pre-exisiting conditions fortunately so they are with "The Green company" and "Protect your bubble" as these were the best policies for a reasonable amount of money (about £50 for both and up to about £7,500 of cover).

From what I've heard (not in my work capacity but as a private individual) a lot of insurance companies are pulling out of pet insurance altogether as they don't think it's financially lucrative enough.

My best advice would be to visit a price comparision website and to carefully check what the policy actually offers. Sometimes what appears to be a 'cheap' policy has ahuge number of restrictions placed upon it that makes the policy practically impossible to claim on.

I have just sorted Dillon out with vetsmedicover through VIP (vet insurance protector) independent pet specialist brokers. They also have Pet Plan on their books. The very nice person I have dealt with has said if the company did not pay out or caused problems for their clients they would not keep them on their books.

£10,000 cover lifetime policy. £38 a month all selected breeds. I have not used them before but the breeder has one of her dogs insured under them and had no problems claiming off them no questions asked sent the claim form and paid the claim. I have used Direct line last year and no problems with them either but no lifetime cover it is per condiiton and the maximum insured is £7000 may be £7,500 but we wanted as much cover as possible. Pet plan I know are meant to be good but very expensive and they have messed up the puppies free insurance twice now.

I will point out vetsmedicover do have the 30 day exclusion for illness where as most companies it is 14 days but injury is covered straight away. I have just covered Dillon so he is covered for injury from the 19th January when his free insurance runs out but illness will not be covered till 10th Feb. I have set up policy today so not much difference to what you would normally have to wait.

As with all insurance they show their true colours when and if and hopefully you don't have to make a claim.

I have spent a week roughly researching and then finally going for it.

Mine are no longer insured. For me, the price I was paying, and the quotes I was getting, were plain silly (DL went from £40, to nearly £60 for the three £80 excess, plus a % of the final cost!)

I now self insure, they have a savings account, where I put in £60 per month, plus they have a Credit card (with a 9k limit). Fingers crossed, we wont ever need it, but its there if we do

My five are with AXA and the premiums vary from £13 per month to £29 (for my oldie). I shall be adding my pup on too. They take about two months to pay up but I haven't had any problems yet. Milo's only went up £6 per month after leg amputation and four sessions of chemo.

Apparently all insurance are going up. My two are with 'protect my bubble' and I will be leaving them as soon as I can as the were a nightmare to deal with when my dog was badly injured in and accident and later died, we had a £6000 vets bill and they took over 60 days to pay out and still found excuses not to pay out in full.

I will use a comparisin site but may go with vetmedcover as they seem a good price

Mine are insured with Direct Line. My two larger dogs cost £22 a month, my small dog costs £15. I can't remember exactly which policy we have but it is one of the maximum ones. All in all very reasonable I think and they have always been swift to pay.

Direct Line isn't on price comparison websites.
