What breed would you recommend?

A mum at Mia's school is thinking of getting a pup but doesnt know what breed to choose, she has 3 children 2, 4 and 7 she wants a dog that doesnt need heaps of exercise, not too big that she couldnt handle it, not too small that it couldnt handle the children, nothing too yappy, something that will fit in to family life.

She has had dogs in the past so is not a first timer.

She is going to Discover Dogs but i thought i would ask you lovely people what you would recommend.

My idea probably won't be very popular, but with that many young children in the house i wouldn't get a dog yet! Especially not a puppy, unless the person is very experienced in training and has the time to train, toilet train and socialise the dog well.

I would've said a Bichon as they seem to fit the bill pretty much, but they do tend to yap quite a lot unfortunately!

I would probably suggest a Cavalier (not sure how yappy they are though?) or a show type Cocker. But then I am a Spaniel lass, so probably no surprise there!

Definitely a Miniature Schnauzer! Ticks all the boxes!

Robust enough to live with kids, not too big, but big enough to not be easily squashed. Not excessively yappy.

Sorted!

I'd agree mini schnauzer or cavalier would be perfect. Good idea to go to discover dogs too just to make sure she's not taking on too much at the moment while the kids are still so young.

I tend to agree, with children that young perhaps it would be wise to wait until they are a little older.

If she can't wait until the children are older, I'd suggest a cavalier spaniel or cocker spaniel

Have to agree with 3 such young children , is may be best to wait till they are older....

Its not the breed, but the fact having a puppy, that will be time consuming.

But people do do it, and if you find a breeder who is willing to let you take a puppy with such a young family, then one of the smaller less active breeds would be best...

I would tend to agee with others who have said it would be best to wait till the children are a bit older .
If however she knows how hard it will be and is prepared for that then I would suggest a cavalier

I agree!
Not so much the type of dog. Dont know any breed that as a puppy is not a challenge! All need exercise and attention. None can be put away in a toy box til it is time to play! I personally would suggest that she lets the children mature sufficiently until a pup can integrate into "the family" and grow up to be the perfect pet and member of the household. Any animal needs as much time and attention as any human equivilent and therefore in my opinion (only mine) ! deserves to have as much attention. Would you expect a child to be perfect, be easy to train and pale into insignificance when it did not suit the rest of the household? Do not mean to be harsh, but sometimes there is no room for a dog, or any other pet at certain times in your life, if you just want one to "fit in" around everything else.
