Antibiotics.

Do you think antibiotics make dogs feel "off colour" like it sometimes does us human?
Mo is on a course of cephalexin and she seems very quiet and dopey.
I worry that she will get diarrhoea, I know I would if I took them. Does it effect dogs in the same way?
I should add that she is taking them for a sore on her leg that has been bothering her for some time.

I should imagin so, plus her sore leg too. I know dogs can be allergic to AB same as humans, and when it says to be given with food, that is because it can upset tum too. Do hope her leg is better soon, she probably feels miserable and sorry for herself hugs to her xxxxxx

Abs are great cos they fight infection by attacking the bacteria causing it. Trouble is they can't distunguish between the bad bacteria and the good bacteria which can live in your gut and protect you from bugs etc. Due to this following a course of ABs you're likely to get the runs as your body no longer has any defences to fight the bug off.

So in short, yes dogs can get the runs from ABs just like humans!

I'm not a fan of probiotic drinks, but it wouldn't do any harm to give your dog the odd one whilst on ABs to try and boost the good bacteria in the gut.

Yes Antibiotics can cause problems and side effects in some dogs, one of mine cannot have any with Cephalexin in such as Rilexine as they cause his stomache to bleed, and his feaces become very loose with fresh blood in and at one stage he was just passing blood without feaces, the last time he had to go on Cimitidine for while untill his stomache settled and he now has a warning indicator on his notes.
