Well I have just heard back from the vet and we are devestated

Tara has a congenital defect called Aganglianosis resulting in functional Ileus, its not treatable surgically and can only be managed .

We are trying hard to remain positive and will be looking for ways to help her as long as possible

Oh dear poor Tara... It's difficult to find much online about it.
You'll have to inform her breeder of course as it's congenital it could mean the whole litter are affected or could be carrying it.

Hugs to you and Tara. Hopefully the vet can come up with a good management program that will allow her to have a good and happy life despite her problem.

I have just had a message from her breeder to say that if the insurance wont cover treatment or if it runs out etc he will cover the costs..I am so grateful as it takes some pressure off and we can look at long term treatment.

A poem dedicated to My special girl

My Wolfhound
Author Unknown

She may not be a show dog,
She's never won a prize,
But I'd pass up blue ribbons
For the love in those brown eyes.
The famous dogs of Ireland
In days of long ago
Like brave Gelert, who saved a child,
Had never seen a show,
But what they had of value
Was the heart that beats within
Each true descendant of those sires,
That thing beneath the skin
That stamps an Irish Wolfhound
Be she champion or pet,
The heritage, that down the years,
These dogs do not forget.
It doesn't really matter
If she never scores a win,
For the thing that makes a wolfhound
Is what lies beneath the skin.

Oh shoot

Being my favourite breed I'm often sad to read of peoples struggles. Wolfies certainly have more than their fair share of problems and I hope everything goes OK for her.

A lovely poem and what a nice breeder. It must have given you some relief that you have some help.

Hopefully whatever course of treatment is taken, it will allow Tara a good quality of life.

Sending you all some hugs.
