Here in the Twilight Zone, we don't have a whole heap of choice! There ARE only two "supermarkets" - Somerfield and the Co-op!

There are quite a few local shops, but, often, you go in to ask for something and it's obvious that they have no idea what you're talking about

Once a week (usually Thursday) we do a "bulk shop" in Somerfield and the Co-op. Both are dependent on the ferries for their stock, so if the ferry has been delayed or cancelled through bad weather, there isn't much to stock up with!

We are going to get a new Lidl soon (it's under construction now) which may provide a bit of much-needed competition! It, too, will be ferry-dependent

Orkney shops are strange - you have to learn them! For instance, if you want good deli stuff, you go to the garden shop. A good bottle of wine for a special occasion? Of course, you go to the ironmonger (where you can buy a gas heater to make sure the temperature is right)!

In the village, go to the Post Office for veg, or to the coal merchant for milk.

So, you see, your usual shops might not be as bad as you think they are!

I agree with you about Waitrose's beef, but I go on the butchers counter in there for it, not off the shelf. All their beef there is Aberdeen Angus, which is really yummy, totally different flavour to our British beef. I usually shop in Sainsburys for certain things, Tesco for others, but most of all I looooooove M & S for special treats. I'mgetting worried, I'm getting addicted to M & S, I've even got one of their storecards now Too risky!!

Asda or Tesco, both about 3 miles away opposite ends of town, occasionally Morrisons but find I always spend more there. Wish we had a Sainsbury,s, friends always say how close to M and S foods they are.

All the basics come from Morrisons but I go to M+S for bread, nicer fruit and veg and deli items like houmous etc. I also use Tesco if I want more exotic fruit and veg. Also use the local pakistani grocers for spices and curry ingredients, and the healthfood shop for specialist stuff. No wonder I seem to spend all my spare time food shopping!

I shop at the main 4 supermarkets. Mostly Asda prefered. Co-op is the local. Also the local market for fresh produce and butcher for fresh meet for the girls.
