doggy girl, if no one bred anymore, dogs would no longer exist, what would happen when all the rescue dogs had been homed, or destroyed? Dogs we be lost in the past, Do you want that to happen!??

It goes without saying that irresponsible breeding causes more dogs in rescue. That's a definite of course. But just as they end up in rescue, so do excellently bred dogs (not all dogs are dumped or mistreated - another misconception). Dharma came from a very reputable breeder, and still ended up in rescue through no fault of her own. You cant guarantee that no well bred dog from a loving and caring breeder who takes all the precautions WONT end up in rescue, or be badly bred from, bought by a puppy farm conman etc. So back to the original question - what makes breeders continue to breed when it's indisputable that this happens?

Yes I will forgive you and yes you have got it wrong .
I don't breed dogs at this time and was explaining why I and others buy from a breeder rather than rescuing a dog and I went on to explain if people only rescued existing dogs and stopped breeding many breeds would die out. I like a good debate but in order to have one it is necessary to read the posts

There is good and bad in everything.

You have the good breeders and the good rescues. They will do their utmost to ensure the dogs best interests. Homechecks carried out, vax, back-up and support.

Then you have the bad in both, rescues and breeders, who just cant be bothered, no homechecks, rehome to families with young children, no vax, not neutered etc. What about the rescues that are taking dogs from pounds in other countries, and with no assessment or history place them directly into a home straight from the port or a motorway service station!

Over the past few months several rescues have recently been exposed for side line breeding, cruelty and malpractice. What makes these different?

At the end of the day its the owners that need to be made responsible for dogs ending up in rescues or pounds. After all they are the ones who have failed the animal in the majority of cases.

Yes Gem I've read that. That's a common statement to defend breeding. Are you saying that that is a reason to continue breeding when there are so many already? Because I dont see that as a valid answer to the original question. Of course noone wants dogs to die out. But they wont as long as there are people choosing to pump more and more out. I'd rather see irresponsible breeding and puppy farming, and accidental matings stop, bu they will never do that. The question was, what prompts someone into breeding knowing there are dogs dying from lack of homes.
